M.A., English:  Rhetoric and Professional Writing, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

B.A., English Literature, Berea College

Biography

I began teaching in 2003 and have taught at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and colleges in North Carolina and Orlando, Florida.  In 2018 I came to Dalton State, where, in addition to teaching, I am now involved in organizing and/or helping with events for the English Department such as the Literary Spooktacular, the Spooky Story Writing Contest, the Free Little Library at the Majors/Careers Fair, and the Author Talks Visiting Writers Series.  My research interest is food studies: the rhetoric of food and food writing, particularly in multi-media texts--because Food Studies and writing "is not for foodies, it's for eaters" (attributed to Dan Pashman of the podcast Sporkful)!  Look for my course in Food Studies offered as English 2000.

All of my classes are designed as an active workspace to encourage emerging technology skills as well as student participation and engagement. We often write in class, work in small peer groups, and use Microsoft Teams to organize documents, provide feedback on them, and generally collaborate and communicate.  You'll be encouraged to actively participate in class by sharing your work from our writing workshops and conversations with small peer groups. I think composition and literature courses are invaluable for learning to explore issues that spark debate in our world today and how to read and write thoughtfully and critically about them.

I invite you to keep up with English Department events, interests, faculty, alumni, and current students on our Instagram account:  https://www.instagram.com/dscenglishdept/.
